Beyond SPF: why complete skin protection requires more than sunscreen
Sun protection often gets all the attention. And rightly so, SPF is the foundation of every good skincare routine.
But healthy skin requires more than protection alone. The skin is constantly working in two directions: limiting damage and repairing itself. SPF supports the first. Targeted techniques such as LED light therapy can strengthen the second. Together, they form an approach that works in line with the skin’s natural processes.
Daily exposure: why SPF is essential
Your skin is under pressure every day. UV radiation, blue light and pollution trigger the formation of free radicals. These can break down collagen, weaken elastin and compromise the skin barrier.
Over time, this becomes visible as fine lines, loss of elasticity, an uneven skin tone and increased sensitivity.
A broad-spectrum SPF50 with mineral filters is therefore the most important step in your routine. These filters reflect UV rays before they penetrate the skin — a gentle and effective form of protection, also suitable for sensitive skin.
But protection only works when applied consistently: daily use, with regular reapplication during sun exposure.
Protection is not an extra step in your routine, but the foundation everything else is built on.
The nuance: what SPF does and doesn’t do
SPF plays a crucial role in preventing new damage.
At the same time, it’s important to understand that protection and repair are two different processes. SPF helps limit damage, but it does not directly influence the repair of existing signs of skin ageing, such as loss of firmness or changes in skin texture.
That doesn’t mean something is missing, but it does mean that, depending on your skin goals, you may choose to further support your routine.
An additional step: light as support for the skin
LED light therapy activates the skin’s natural repair mechanisms.
Red and near-infrared light (630 + 850 nm) penetrate into the dermis and stimulate fibroblasts, the cells involved in collagen production. This supports cellular energy and can contribute to improved circulation, a stronger skin barrier and a more even skin structure.
Unlike topical products, light therapy works directly at a cellular level.
With consistent use, a few times per week, studies show for example:
– improved elasticity
– a reduction in fine lines
– a more even, radiant complexion
The complete approach
An effective routine doesn’t need to be complex.
Morning
Apply a broad-spectrum mineral SPF50 daily, tailored to your skin. Our Daily Defence Fluids respond to different skin needs. Reapply during sun exposure.
Evening
Use an LED mask such as LUME+ for 15–20 minutes, a few times per week. With consistent use, results become visible over time.
Protection during the day helps prevent damage. Support in the evening helps the skin recover.
Why consistency matters more than intensity
Results take time.
Collagen builds gradually and the skin barrier restores itself step by step. That’s why consistency always outweighs occasional, intensive use.
Daily SPF helps prevent visible damage.
Consistent use of LED light therapy can improve skin quality over time.
It’s not one product that makes the difference, but the rhythm in which you support your skin.
Good skincare starts with the biology of the skin. Protection and repair are not opposites, but work in synergy.
The best anti-ageing begins with daily protection.
The most effective protection is strengthened by consistent repair.
