Fermentation in skincare: why a strong routine starts before your serum
Your serum often gets all the attention. But what comes before it is just as important for an effective skincare routine. When your skin is well hydrated and properly prepared, the products that follow can perform at their best. Discover how fermentation, prebiotic inulin and PHA gently refine and hydrate the skin, preparing it for the serums and creams that follow.
Fermentation in skincare: why a strong routine starts before your serum
Kombucha sparked our curiosity. Not because it is popular, but because it led us to a far more interesting story: fermentation and the remarkable interaction between micro-organisms and our skin.
Your skin is home to an entire ecosystem of bacteria and other micro-organisms: the skin microbiome. Together, they help keep the skin balanced, support its natural protective function and contribute to comfortable, resilient skin.
This science formed the starting point for our Skin Ferment Essence and Fermented Catalyst Complex®. By combining fermented rice extract with prebiotic inulin, the formula helps support a favourable environment for the skin’s natural flora. This not only leaves the skin hydrated and refined, but also optimally prepared for the next steps in your routine.
More from nature. More for your skin. That’s the power of fermentation in skincare.
What does fermentation do for your skin?
During fermentation, microorganisms such as yeasts break down certain substances into smaller, refined components. This process naturally produces valuable compounds, including amino acids, antioxidants and organic acids, making fermented ingredients particularly interesting in skincare.
In our Skin Ferment Essence, we use fermented rice extract. It helps hydrate and nourish the skin, supports the skin barrier and contributes to a smoother, softer and more even-looking complexion.
We combine this fermented rice extract with prebiotic inulin, which helps create a favourable environment for the skin’s natural flora. This means the formula not only enhances the appearance of your skin, but also supports its balance, hydration and comfort.
The result? Not an aggressive treatment that overwhelms the skin, but a gentle daily step that refines the skin and prepares it for the serums and creams that follow.
Two ingredients. One smart synergy.
At the heart of Skin Ferment Essence is our Fermented Catalyst Complex®: a carefully considered combination of fermented rice extract and prebiotic inulin. Two ingredients that each play their own role, but work even more effectively together.
- Fermented rice extract naturally contains amino acids, antioxidants and organic acids. It helps hydrate and nourish the skin, supports the skin barrier and contributes to a smoother, softer and more radiant-looking complexion.
- Prebiotic inulin helps create a favourable environment for the skin’s natural flora. In doing so, it helps support the balance of the skin microbiome, skin comfort and a healthy skin barrier.
While fermented rice extract helps hydrate and refine the skin, inulin supports its natural balance. Together, they create a smart foundation for skin that feels fresher and more comfortable and is perfectly prepared for the products that follow.
Gentle exfoliation. Fresh glow.
Alongside the Fermented Catalyst Complex®, the formula contains PHA and green tea: two ingredients that help gently refine, hydrate and protect the skin.
PHA, in the form of lactobionic acid, gently helps remove dead skin cells while attracting moisture to the skin. This helps refine skin texture without overstimulating it, leaving the skin looking smoother, softer and fresher.
Green tea is naturally rich in antioxidants and helps protect the skin against oxidative stress. Together, they provide gentle daily renewal and a healthy glow, even for sensitive skin.
The step that completes your routine
An essence is neither a toner nor a serum. It is the smart in-between step that hydrates, refines and prepares your skin for the skincare that follows.
- Toner: helps rebalance the skin after cleansing.
- Essence: hydrates, refines and prepares the skin.
- Serum: targets a specific skin concern.
The correct order is:
TONER → ESSENCE → SERUM → CREAM → SPF
Apply Skin Ferment Essence in the morning and/or evening after your toner. Dispense approximately one-third of a pipette into the palms of your hands and gently press into the face and neck. Follow with your serum and cream.
It all starts before your serum
An effective skincare routine isn’t about using as many products as possible, but about preparing your skin in the right way. Skin Ferment Essence provides that essential preparatory step, combining gentle skin renewal, intense hydration and support for the skin microbiome in one daily formula.
Its lightweight gel texture melts into the skin, leaving it feeling instantly fresher, smoother and more comfortable. At the same time, the essence helps prepare your skin for the next steps, allowing the serums and creams that follow to perform at their best.
Not an unnecessary extra step, but the missing link between your toner and serum. Because the better your skin is prepared, the more you can get out of your entire routine.
