Are you experiencing persistent redness or annoying bumps on your face and wondering what's going on? Don't worry; you're not alone! In this edition of Likami Skin School, we focus on rosacea, a frequently misunderstood skin condition that can affect your confidence and skin health. Discover what rosacea is, what causes it, and how to best care for your skin to keep the symptoms under control. Read on to learn how to give your skin calmness and relief!

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face and can lead to persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes bumps that resemble acne. This condition can occur in anyone but is more common in women and people with fair skin. Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disorder, which means it is associated with inflammatory reactions that irritate and sensitize the skin. It is important not to confuse rosacea with couperose, another skin condition often mistaken for rosacea. Couperose is primarily a cosmetic issue in which the blood vessels in the face are permanently dilated, without the inflammation or acne-like bumps characteristic of rosacea. While couperose results in constant redness due to broken blood vessels, rosacea is characterized by a fluctuating pattern of redness and inflammation, often leading to discomfort and skin sensitivity. Understanding the difference is crucial for effective skin treatment and care.

Symptoms of rosacea:

Rosacea manifests in different stages and can vary from person to person. The most common symptoms are:

  • Facial redness: Often on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead.
  • Swollen red bumps: Sometimes filled with pus and resembling acne.
  • Burning or stinging sensation: The skin may feel sensitive and irritated.
  • Enlarged blood vessels: Visible veins on the face.
  • Eye problems: In some cases, eyes can become dry, irritated, and swollen, a condition known as ocular rosacea.

What causes rosacea?

Although the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, several factors contribute to its development:

  • Genetic predisposition: Rosacea can run in families.
  • Environmental factors: Exposure to sunlight, extreme temperatures, and wind can worsen the condition.
  • Lifestyle and diet: Spicy food, alcohol, caffeine, and stress are known triggers.
  • Microorganisms: The presence of the Demodex mite or Helicobacter pylori bacteria is associated with rosacea.

Do's and Don'ts for caring for rosacea:

To further manage the symptoms of rosacea, consider incorporating the following practices and products into your routine:

DO'S:

  • Try our Skin Redness Plus Serum: Our Skin Redness Plus Serum contains azelaic acid, known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which help reduce redness and swelling and improve skin texture.
  • Protect your skin from the sun: Sun protection is essential, as exposure to UV rays can worsen rosacea. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily. Our Anti-Pollution Shield SPF30 provides effective protection without irritating the skin.
  • Use products with niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Niacinamide is known for its anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties, helping to reduce redness and strengthen the skin barrier. Try our Anti-Acne Serum, which contains niacinamide to calm and protect your skin.
  • Use gentle, non-foaming cleansers: Cleansing is essential, but choose a gentle, non-foaming cleanser like the Cleansing Milk that does not irritate the skin. This helps remove impurities without damaging the skin's natural protective barrier.
  • Eye care: For those with ocular rosacea, it is important to use gentle eye care products and maintain good eyelid hygiene to reduce irritation. The Dream Repair Eye Oil is very suitable for this purpose.
  • Moisturize with hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid retains moisture in the skin and helps maintain a healthy skin barrier without causing irritation. Our Hydration Serum is perfect for intensely hydrating the skin without clogging pores.
  • Use cryotherapy: Cold therapy can help reduce inflammation and redness. Try our Cryo Ice Sticks for a soothing effect on the skin and to ease redness.
  • Soothing ingredients: Consider products with soothing ingredients such as chamomile, oat extract, aloe vera, and green tea extract to calm the skin and reduce redness.
  • Use a humidifier: A humidifier at home can help avoid a dry environment, which can reduce irritation.

DON'TS:

  • Avoid hot baths and showers: Heat can dilate blood vessels and worsen redness. It's better to use lukewarm water when showering or bathing.
  • No harsh exfoliation: Avoid physical scrubbing or harsh exfoliants that can irritate the skin and worsen redness.
  • Minimize your skincare routine: Use a simple skincare routine without irritating ingredients. Introduce new products slowly and in limited amounts to better determine which products cause a positive or negative reaction.
  • Avoid excessive use of medications: Even though medications can be effective, they can also have side effects. It is important to use them only as prescribed by a doctor.

By incorporating these tips and products into your daily skincare routine, you can better manage the symptoms of rosacea and give your skin the care it needs.

At Likami, we understand how annoying and uncomfortable rosacea can be. That's why we developed the Skin Redness Plus Serum, specifically designed to reduce redness and calm the skin. One of the key active ingredients in this serum is azelaic acid.

What is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid found in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. It is an effective ingredient in treating rosacea because of its versatile properties:

  • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces redness and swelling by calming inflammation in the skin.
  • Antimicrobial: Helps kill bacteria that can cause inflammation and pimples.
  • Keratoregulating: Reduces the buildup of dead skin cells that can clog pores, contributing to a smoother skin texture.

Due to these properties, azelaic acid not only helps to reduce the visible symptoms of rosacea, such as redness and bumps, but also prevents future flare-ups by purifying and calming the skin.

Our Skin Redness Plus Serum combines azelaic acid with other powerful natural ingredients, such as Gotu Kola, known for its restorative and calming effects, and Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps combat free radical damage. This unique combination helps bring the skin back into balance and makes it less susceptible to flare-ups.
